Recycling (Contact DPW at 508-841-8502)

Massachusetts State Law and the Shrewsbury Town recycling by-law (PDF) makes recycling mandatory in Shrewsbury.

Recycling is collected every week but alternates between YELLOW weeks (Mixed Paper) and GRAY weeks (Commingled)  basis and the town is divided into two different routes (blue or green).

Recycling bins must be at the curb by 7:00 A.M., as routes and drivers are subject to change without notice.

In the winter months, recycling bins must be free of snow and ice and clearly visible to the collection crew.

RECYCLOPEDIA
Last month, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced a groundbreaking, statewide recycling education initiative to reduce contamination in recycling by asking residents to “do their part and recycle smart.”

Recyclopedia is a search tool, where residents can search for hundreds of items (from paper bags to pizza boxes) to find out how to properly manage them.  There is also a video showing the recycling sorting process inside a MRF and answers to frequently asked questions about why and how to recycle smart. Visit Recyclopedia to learn more!

Recycling Bin Options

  • You may purchase a recycle bin at the Department of Public Works (DPW) located on the 2nd floor in the Town Hall.
The DPW sells 22 gallon size bins and the cost is $11.00* each (*price subject to change). However, you are not required to purchase the town's bins.
Note: The color of the bin does not matter. It can be any color.
It just cannot exceed a 32 gallon size.
Accepted payment methods: Cash or Check made payable to: Town of Shrewsbury

  • You may purchase your own bin up to a 32 gallon size.

The Town can provide a free RECYCLE decal (limit of two per household).

If you purchase your own bin, please be sure it has proper drainage holes at the bottom. This will prevent recyclables from being saturated with water.
IMPORTANT:  Please DO NOT put your recyclables in any type of plastic bag.                                  Recyclables must be in a bin marked "Recycling".
