Town Right-of-Way

In the Town of Shrewsbury, homeowners are responsible to maintain the area from the curb to approximately 10 feet back from the property line. This section is known as the town right-of-way.

Right-of-Way Responsibilities & Permissions

  • Any installation within this area, including a mailbox, is placed there at the owner's risk. Owners are encouraged to install mailboxes or posts at the maximum usable distance from the edge of the roadway.
  • Installation, reconstruction or elimination of a driveway connection to a town road, requires a driveway permit from the Highway Department.
  • Snow should be removed from any sidewalks in these areas by the home or business owner for the safety of those walking and school children getting to and from bus stops.
  • Work being done in this area by a homeowner or a utility company requires a permit from the Town of Shrewsbury.

Driveways

In the event that you will be installing, reconstructing or eliminating a driveway connection to a Town Road, you are required to obtain a driveway permit. You can obtain a driveway permit application at the Highway Department.

 Subdivisions

When planning to add a subdivision, you must contact the Engineering Department to begin the planning process and to obtain the proper permits.
